As an aspiring entrepreneur, I was eager to start my own business but didn’t have a lot of money to invest. After watching countless YouTube videos on dropshipping, affiliate marketing, and other online businesses that seemed out of reach, I finally stumbled upon a video that showed me how to leverage AI to launch a print-on-demand apparel company with $0 upfront.
At first, I was skeptical — could it really be that easy to start a profitable business? But I decided to give it a shot using the step-by-step blueprint outlined in the video. Here is my journey and the lessons I learned along the way.
Finding Winning Designs With Data
The first step was identifying trending and unique apparel designs that had high sales potential. I signed up for a free trial of Merch Informer, which is a research tool that analyzes Amazon products.
Using the “Movers & Shakers” feature, I was able to see which designs were rapidly gaining popularity based on their Best Seller Rank (BSR). A lower BSR indicates strong sales.
I browsed through the discounted items, looking for interesting patterns and themes. But I was careful not to choose any designs from trademarked brands like Disney.
The Trend Tracker tool also allowed me to see upcoming trends and filter by product categories. After compiling a list of potential winners, it was time to evaluate them further.
Assessing Competition and Sales Data
This next step was crucial to gauge if a specific design was worth pursuing. I utilized Merch Informer’s Competition Checker to analyze my top picks.
It assigns a grade from A to F for each listing based on factors like number of competitors and monthly sales. I knew any designs graded “A” had the highest likelihood of success.
The tool also revealed the top selling listings ranked by BSR. With this data, I now felt confident in choosing designs to move forward with.
Bringing Designs to Life With AI
Now for the fun part — using AI to generate eye-catching designs! Specifically, I leveraged Midjourney, a text-to-image AI.
To create an image, you simply type a text prompt describing what you want. For example, for my hockey helmet design, I included keywords like “hockey, helmet, vintage” along with some descriptive elements.
After some trial and error tweaking prompts, the AI generated exactly what I imagined! I was amazed at the quality and detail of the images.
Enhancing and Finalizing Designs
With my AI generated designs in hand, I wanted to polish them up before listing them for sale. Using AI image upscaler, I enhanced the resolution and clarity drastically.
The improved versions looked crisp and print-ready. I removed the backgrounds to isolate just the main design elements.
Finally, I added any extra text needed like motivational quotes for wall art or the product descriptions for apparel listings. And voila — my designs were complete!
Selling Instantly With Print-On-Demand
The easiest way to sell custom apparel with no upfront costs is using print-on-demand (POD) websites like Printful, Printify, and Teespring.
POD handles printing and shipping your orders. You simply upload your designs and set your pricing. When an order comes in, they make and ship the item directly to the customer.
The POD service takes a cut of each sale, but you keep the rest in profit. Some platforms even provide marketing tools to help drive traffic to your listings.
With my optimized designs uploaded, I was ready to start my business!
Driving Organic Traffic to Listings
While POD platforms have built-in audiences, I knew I needed to boost visibility further through marketing — especially as a beginner with no reviews or sales history.
Leveraging social media was the most affordable way for me to promote my products and direct traffic back to my print-on-demand listings.
I created posts showcasing my designs on Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest. The goal was to get potential customers clicking through to purchase the products on the POD sites.
Bit by bit, I started seeing sales trickle in. It was working! With this proof of concept, it was time to scale things up.
Tweaking and Expanding Designs
Looking at my top performing listings, I identified opportunities to build upon those winning products even more.
For example, I took one popular design and created multiple color variations and text options. I also adapted it for additional products like phone cases and stickers.
Repurposing existing designs saved me time coming up with new concepts from scratch. Plus, it allowed me to cater to different customer preferences.
Diversifying to Multiple Print-on-Demand Platforms
Another key strategy was distributing my designs across multiple print-on-demand marketplaces.
Each site has different traffic sources and a unique audience. By listing my products on both Printful and Teespring for instance, I opened up more potential sales channels.
Testing different PODs also allowed me to see which performed the best in terms of order volume and product quality. Over time, I determined Printify was my top performer.
Refining My Process Over Time
During my first few months in business, I went through a lot of trial and error figuring out what worked. But with each launch, my process improved.
I had my product research and design creation down to a science. I became more targeted and effective with my marketing. My POD listings also started ranking higher.
By continually optimizing my approach, my sales and profit steadily increased week over week. What started as a side hobby began to turn into a real business.
Expanding Beyond Apparel Into Other Products
Once I had traction selling apparel, I started exploring other print-on-demand product types like home decor, phone accessories, and stationery.
Some items like pillows, mugs, and greeting cards opened up more creativity with the designs. I was able to offer a wider range of products to customers.
Diversifying into more POD products also provided multiple income streams. My revenue was no longer tied to just t-shirts and hoodies.
Lessons Learned Turning My Side Hustle Into a Real Business
When I first discovered how easy it was to start a print-on-demand business, I didn’t realize just how much work went into scaling it. Here are some of my biggest lessons learned:
- Research and analyze data — Don’t just guess what might sell. Use tools to identify winning, untapped designs with analytics.
- Perfect prompt engineering — Experiment and polish your AI prompts. The right wording makes all the difference in the quality of generated images.
- Enhance designs — Use image upscalers and editing software to make designs print-ready. Polish them up!
- Test different platforms — Every print-on-demand site has pros and cons. Find the ones that work best for your goals.
- Promote relentlessly — It takes continuous marketing to drive eyes to your listings. Don’t let up once you have sales.
- Analyze and optimize — Pay attention to what’s working and refine your process accordingly. Be flexible and adapt.
- Expand your offerings — More products equal more revenue potential. Diversify into other print-on-demand items over time.
- Don’t give up — Success doesn’t happen overnight. Stick with it through the ups and downs. Your sales will grow.
